Chapter Five

“You coming in?” Ivan asked. His face gave away none of his feelings.

Mitch didn’t answer. He was overwhelmed by emotion, knowing this was do or die time. After what had happened yesterday at his apartment, they had to resolve their issues. Both their friendship and their partnership depended on this conversation.

He walked into Ivan’s living room and waited for his friend to shut the door and come closer to him.

It was now or never. If he didn’t take the opportunity now, he’d lose Ivan forever. Balls to the wall, he thought.

Without warning, Mitch grabbed Ivan and pulled him into his arms. Holding Ivan’s head between his two hands, he looked at the man he had loved for so long as a friend. It was the same face he had known for years. The same green eyes, the same nose, lips…

“I love you,” Mitch finally confessed.

Surprise, confusion and longing were reflected in those eyes and Mitch was lost. He needed…he needed…no, he wanted this man so much. He’d finally spoken his mind and couldn’t wait any longer. If Ivan’s shooting and Sarah’s return had taught Mitch anything, it was that he needed to seize the moment or lose him forever.

Slowly, as if in a dream, Mitch leant forward and captured Ivan’s mouth. Nothing he had ever experienced before could compare with the feelings that were coursing through his body at the moment their lips first met. Desire—lust, certainly—but mostly an all-encompassing feeling of love. This was where he was supposed to be—holding Ivan in his arms, loving him. All the pieces of the puzzle that had eluded Mitch in all his previous relationships suddenly fell into place. He was home. No woman and no other man could ever make him feel this way. He had found his other half. His soulmate. The yin to his yang and all those other clichés the poets talked about. The simple truth was that Ivan made him feel alive and happy, and he never wanted to leave his embrace.

Moving his lips over his partner’s and continuing the motion, Mitch slowly slid his hands from where they rested on Ivan’s cheeks up into his hair. Grabbing a handful of those silky blond locks, Mitch was able to turn his friend’s head to a better angle and deepen the kiss.

The physical attraction had been there from the beginning, burning just beneath the surface of their close friendship, but with their mouths fused together it was like the Fourth of July. Sensations flickered along Mitch’s spine and every part of him tingled. His body was singing with desire for Ivan.

His mouth moved savagely against Ivan’s, leaving no room for anything but a response and for a wonder Ivan clung to Mitch, moaning low in his throat. It was like that fateful night Mitch couldn’t get out of his head. Dark, wild and hotter than anything he’d ever known. Mitch felt as if he were falling into a great void—an unknown place he had always wanted to find, but, now that it had happened, he was a little frightened.
